Encourage Attendance/Involvement
Class:
Hospital Promotion
Objective: To thank people for
giving blood platelets and to encourage them to become repeat donors.
Strategy and Execution:
The cost of blood platelets could be reduced at this hospital by increasing the
number of blood donations. To encourage donations, a campaign slogan was chosen
and distributed along with information to all hospital staff, volunteers, and family and friends of
patients needing platelets. They were told they would receive a gift each time they
donated platelets, with a gift of greater value each time they returned. The
imprinted items were lapel pins, t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, beach towels and
sweatshirts. In addition,
birthday greeting cards went to each
person who donated, with a poem about the gift of life produced on a
refrigerator magnet.
Results:
It was reported that 802 units of platelet donations were received, an increase
of 347% from the previous year. Since the hospital did not have to purchase
these units, a savings of $215,000 was realized.
Class:
Municipal Promotion
Objective: To raise funds and
generate anticipation for the township's tricentennial celebration.
Strategy and Execution:
Planning for the city's anniversary observance began 18 months before and
featured ways to involve most residents. City officials worked to enlist
corporate sponsors and develop commemorative products to sell, which would pay
for aspects of the anniversary celebration. Local retailers could buy and
display window decals; a Tricentennial Golf Tournament was staged, with
each of the 18 holes assigned an historic name and made available to a sponsor
for a donation. Wearables from t-shirts to caps and
glassware with
the tricentennial logo and drawings of historic sites helped raise funds.
Cloisonne' lapel pins were presented to
city personnel, with some to be sold as collectors' items at the birthday event.
Results:
The original goals were surpassed - $100,000 was raised, and it was reported
that 20,000 - 30,000 people were expected for the birthday celebration, "largely
attributable to the outstanding planning, promotion and products provided," said
the mayor.
